David Hunter has practiced law in New Orleans since 1982, including as a partner at Phelps Dunbar from 1991–1999 before joining Jones Walker as a special counsel in January 2000.  His practice focuses on the energy industry: oil and gas, coal, sulphur, and electrical power. Mr. Hunter represents landowners, lessees, and lenders in oil and gas matters encompassing the full range of issues and relations that arise from mineral leases.  These include standard lease interpretation questions, including royalty and production issues; regulatory questions through the State of Louisiana or the Minerals Management Service; operational questions, usually involving both the lease and the applicable operating agreement; and transportation and sales questions.

With respect to coal and sulphur, his practice is similar, focusing on lease and supply agreements. His electrical power practice spans the development of new facilities, both regulated and unregulated, through the negotiation of power sales agreements.

Mr. Hunter has counseled, and continues to counsel, an energy company in connection with licensing, regulatory, and contractual matters arising in connection with the development of an offshore facility designed to receive and store liquid natural gas (LNG) and other liquid products. Most recently, he represented a large independent in an acquisition of $1.1 billion of offshore properties.

Mr. Hunter's other practice areas include lending, gaming, and contract matters.
